The Civil Rights Movement was a decades-long struggle for the political, legal, and social equality of African Americans in the United States. The movement's major initiatives included desegregation, voting rights, anti-discrimination laws, and institutionalized affirmative action for black Americans. Led by prominent civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and John Lewis, agitation for equality during the 1950s and 1960s was met with a mixture of triumphs and tragedies. While the successes of the Civil Rights Movement were expansive, it also faced its challenges: violent opposition, corporate resistance, and government intransigence.

(1929–1968) Martin Luther King Jr. was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, tactics his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire. King, along with civil rights leaders including Rosa Parks and fellow Nobel Laureate, Ralph Bunche, helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. He was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. King was assassinated in 1968.
